In the 11 year history of the Interior Design Show, the Space Concepts feature has inspired, intrigued and excited over half a million visitors. IDS 09 was no exception. Five of Canada’s most innovative and inspiring design firms were assembled, each of whom represent very different design disciplines – production and retail design; industrial design, luxury architecture, luxury residential interior design, and landscape architecture.
Representing a combination of emerging and under the radar designers coupled with established design celebrities, the five selected firms share some things in common – innovation, inspiration and talent…and for you, they each designed and created a living space that reflects their own personal notion of good design, free of client demands or budget restrictions…we hope that you enjoyed the trip.

Brian Richer and Kei Ng
Castor
Industrial designers
Castor is Brian Richer and Kei Ng and others. According to Brian “Above the plebian comfort objections the structural dynamic analysis must utilize and be functionally interwoven with the philosophy of commonality and standardization.” Kei agrees and expands on their principles by stating: “In the final rationalization the massing of major elements presents extremely synergistic challenges to study of true fecundity in the state of the art”.
From conception, fabrication to installation Castor combines technical knowledge, craftsmanship and design sense to create uncommon objects. Brian Richer trained as an architectural stone carver and studied English Literature and Philosophy. Kei Ng- the Malaysian assassin- studied architecture at the University of Manitoba prior to art directing and running his own restaurant.
Castor has worked with Nike (NY), Sid Lee (Amsterdam), The Chelsea Hotel, Aspen Restaurant (NY), Claude Cormier and many international clients. Their products are available in Toronto (Klaus by Knienkamper), Matter (NY), Sid Lee Collective (Amsterdam). Castor has been considered for the MOMA, Venice Biennale and has recently won a large public art commission. They have also recently opened their own restaurant in the heart of Toronto’s contemporary gallery scene on West Queen West, called Oddfellows.
Their reclaimed, reassembled and innovative products like the pendant light made of used flourescent tubes or Castor Canadiana like concrete tables whose legs have been “chewed up by a beaver” or antler headphones are seen on the pages of international magazines like Azure, World of Interiors, Metropolis Magazine and Surface.
Three years ago, Castor exhibited at IDS with a shipping container retrofitted as a sauna. Last year, selected as one of IDS’ Canadian Innovative Designers, they created an ice fishing hut – made of concrete and stained glass windows in the shape of a cross. Castor is the first product design firm to have been invited to create one of the concept spaces in the IDS’ 11 year history…we look forward to seeing what they come up with next…
