The Brooke is the UK’s leading overseas equine welfare charity dedicated to relieving the suffering of horses, donkeys and mules working in the developing world. These loyal animals toil under the most gruelling conditions while suffering from injuries, lameness, exhaustion, disease and dehydration, but much of their suffering is preventable. Our network of mobile veterinary teams, field clinics and community animal health workers provide care and treatment in conjunction with vital education and training to teach entire communities how to care for the animals on which their lives depend. Last year we were able to reach a record 700,000 working animals, benefiting over 3.5 million people - the poor owners, and their families, who rely on these hardworking animals to earn a basic living and feed and clothe their families.Founded in 1934 by Dorothy Brooke, we now operate in 10 countries across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Central America. There are approximately 100 million working equine animals in the world and the Brooke estimates that of these at least five million suffer the very worst welfare imaginable. Next year, we will be celebrating our 75th anniversary and, with the help of our supporters, we aim to expand our work and reach at least 2 million of these animals over the next five years.
