Globe style Saturday

Globe Style Saturday at IDS13, presented by PARA Paints, explored the real trends that are driving how design shapes our cities, neighbourhoods and homes. This powerhouse speakers’ series featured three renowned designers that helped us understand how design works today. The inspiring line-up included furnishings designer and writer Christiane Lemieux, who talked about her influential work at DwellStudio in New York, culture shaper Douglas Coupland, who presented his new body of work with SwitzerCult Creative, and architect and TV host John Gidding.

IDS13 Globe Style Saturday Christiane Lemieux

Christiane Lemieux

A native of Ottawa, Christiane Lemieux began her career in fashion, working as a fabric assistant for Isaac Mizrahi and then as an assistant designer for the Gap. She then applied her skills to home furnishings as design director with Portico, a New York-based home company, where she fell in love with the permanence and craftsmanship of home design.

Christiane revolutionized the textiles market when she launched her innovative company DwellStudio in 1999. Confident and bold, her work breaks the rigidity of modernism with luxurious details and beauty. DwellStudio is a fresh voice in the interiors world, moving beyond pure aesthetics. Christiane’s unique sense of colour and love of old-world details quickly set DwellStudio apart from other brands. Since launching, the company has expanded to a full offering of furniture, accessories, art and bedding, as well as a full line of baby and kids products. In 2011, Christiane authored her first book, Undecorate, to critical acclaim.

IDS13 Globe Style Saturday - Douglas Coupland

Douglas Coupland

A renaissance man for sure, Douglas Coupland is unafraid to embrace a range of creative outlets to express his ideas. Well-known as a novelist, his visual art, installations and design projects have earned him considerable status as a true visionary and groundbreaker. His first novel, the international bestseller Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture, changed our vocabulary and ushered in a new way to understand our culture and how we navigate through it. He has continued to disrupt and offer new perspectives through all of his subsequent work.

Douglas has been described as “…possibly the most gifted exegete of North American mass culture writing today” by The UK Guardian, and “one of the great satirists of consumerism” by The Daily Telegraph. His work synthesizes high and low culture, technology, and changes in human existence caused by modern technologies.
