Material Trends: Revolutionize Your Material Approach
9am-10am

Lana Lanares

Ana Linares
Specialist at Material ConneXion (New York)

Award winning designer, Ana Linares is a Materials Specialist at Material ConneXion (New York). Her passion for design has lent itself to the creation of successful products like the Duo Shelf and the Conversation Chair sold on Fab.com. Ana’s style and design philosophy has been granted numerous awards including the Umbra Award for the Magazine Rack created for the Umbra/Pratt Design Competition in 2007 and the MDF Modern+Design+Function award from Design Within Reach in 2010. At Material ConneXion Ana works closely with the consulting team to support industry leading companies find material solutions for their projects. Her experience and taste are fundamental for the assessment of new trends and the exploration of new materials. In 2011 Ana’s chair Conversation was featured in “1000 Designs for The Garden” by Laurence King Publishing, London. Her knowledge in the field and her practical approach to developing her design ideas made her an excellent guest speaker with Jonathan Adler at Apartment Therapy Design Series at Knoll’s Showroom in 2010.

Discussion: The materials and products we select for interior design projects say so much more than simply color and form. Material choices in all aspects of a project design, strategy and development affect the perception of that environment, and due to our customer's increased knowledge and interest in the surfaces they see and touch, we need to ensure that the story behind the material is as compelling as the material itself. Whatever storytelling the interior design specs are aiming to achieve, this also needs to be communicated through the environment, and thus through the materials themselves. Add to this the ever present need to lower our environmental footprint with sustainable choices, and the simple idea of specking materials becomes something more involved, more important. This presentation brings to life some of the more recent innovative materials accepted into the Material ConneXion library ideal for retail environments, and also provides the context, background and sustainability aspects of these products, highlighting the enhanced communication of a brand experience that can be achieved through creative sourcing for these types of materials.

Design – Television Style
1pm - 2pm

Liz Wharnsby
Designer/Stylist

Liz Wharnsby has always known she would be a designer (just ask her mother) as a child changing the layout of her bedroom was a weekly occurrence. After high school, Liz ventured off to Europe for 2 years, where she gained an appreciation and love of interior design and architecture. Coming back to Canada, she completed her interior design studies and graduated with honors from the International Academy of Design. Liz is an experienced and well-versed designer and stylist with a strong and energetic presence in the Toronto design community where she divides her time between taking on residential and commercial design projects as well as creating spaces for television shows such as CBC's Steven & Chris, HGTV's Home to Keep, Home to Flip, For Rent, The Style Department and Kitchen Equipped. .

Discussion: Liz will provide an inside look at the process of creating spaces for television design shows. She will begin with a brief overview of her path into the design world along with her design philosophy. Liz will then discuss the similarities and differences of producing décor designs for a weekly national television show to real-life design projects, the rewards and challenges (budget, time restraints, camera views), sourcing and trade relationships, pulling it all together for camera (including slides of various completed rooms from HGTV’s ‘Home to Keep’), and how all of this has helped her to be a better designer.
